Guitar Tablature - Woodenpicks.com

Guitar Tab - OK, so you've bought a new guitar, and been playing until your fingers bleed.  Before you give up trying
to learn how to play that "special" song you like, take a few seconds and learn how to read guitar tab.  This can be
a great benefit to any level guitarist who wants to capitalize on the combined work of other guitar players.
After all, why spend hours trying to figure out notes and guitar chords to songs you like when you can get nearly
perfect notations off the Internet for free?
Reading guitar tablature is really quite easy (If I can figure this out, anyone can).  It is
important to remember that no matter how fast you become at this, you should still
listen to the actual song before trying to learn the tab.  Guitar tab notation does not
give the details for length of notes as does sheet music, but you can learn to identify
chords, bends, tapping, harmonics, etc.

Here are a few basic rules to quickly begin reading guitar tab:

The 6 lines represent the guitar strings (E-A-D-G-B-e)

E------------------------------        Unwound High pitch e
B------------------------------
G------------------------------
D------------------------------
A------------------------------
E------------------------------        Low E - The biggest diameter string

The numbers on the chart lines indicate which string & what fret position you are to
play

E----------0--------------------
B----------0--------------------
G----------1--------------------
D----------2--------------------
A----------2--------------------
E----------X--------------------

In the example above, you see notation indicating the chord "E Major" (It would look
like this on a guitar chord chart)

E----------------------0-
B------------------0-----
G-------1----------------
D------------2-----------
A---2--------------------
E------------------------

With this tab example you will play each note in the "E Major" chord pattern one
string at a time.  Note that you should not play the "Low E" string, and the "G"
string in this tab is picked second and then "D".  "B" & "E" will be played individually
to follow.

E------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G------9b-9b----7--9---------7v---------7v-------------------------------7----------------
D-----------------------9----------9-----------9----------------7----9---------------9-------
A-------------------------------------------------------7/9-------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The guitar tab above is part of the lead guitar of Pink Floyd's "Money"
(Blues scale in B Major)

The legend for the characters used here is:
"b" = Bend
"v" = Vibrato
" / " = Slide Forward

I hope this little tablature example helps you begin to see the ease with which
one can begin to learn familiar songs with guitar tab.
